Festival calendar of Braj — 2026 & 2027

Lunar dates shift every year, so we publish dated pages each cycle. These are the dates we are tracking now — Janmashtami 2026 fell on 4–5 September; here is the full year ahead and what each festival actually looks like on the ground.

Janmashtami — Krishna’s birth (4–5 Sep 2026)

Mathura’s biggest night. Janmabhoomi runs through the night with hours-long queues; the old city closes to vehicles from midday; Vrindavan’s temples fill to capacity. Radhashtami (13 Sep 2026)

Radha’s appearance day, a week after Janmashtami. Barsana is the centre — the hilltop Radha Rani temple fills with devotees and the village glows. Quieter than Janmashtami but still busy; the same early-start rule applies.

Sharad Purnima (25 Oct 2026)

The autumn full moon of the raas-lila. Nidhivan and Prem Mandir hold special evening programmes; kheer is left in moonlight, a Braj tradition. Beautiful, moderate crowds, lovely weather.

Govardhan Puja & Annakut (9–10 Nov 2026)

After Diwali, the Govardhan parikrama becomes the stage: food mountains (annakut) are offered at Jatipura’s Mukharvind temple and the hill circuit fills with pilgrims. Vehicles restricted near the main temples — go early, walk. Parikrama guide →

Kartik month & Dev Diwali (Oct–Nov 2026)

The entire Kartik month (roughly late Oct–Nov) is Vrindavan’s devotional peak: dawn aartis on the ghats, thousands of lamps, Nidhivan evenings. Dev Diwali (~23–24 Nov 2026) lines Vishram Ghat with diyas. This is the sweet spot for most pilgrims — see best time.

Holi & Lathmar Holi (Mar 2027)

  • Lathmar Holi, Barsana (~1–2 Mar 2027): the stick-Holi spectacle. Arrive by 7 am; protect cameras and skin; stay out of the lathi zone. Barsana guide →

How we date these

Festivals follow the Hindu lunar calendar (tithi-based), so dates move each Gregorian year. We publish a dated page each cycle and update the living calendar on the homepage. For official confirmations, check the district portal mathura.nic.in and UP Tourism before finalising travel.

Book like it is a flight For Janmashtami and Holi windows: trains sell out weeks ahead, hotel prices triple, and the old city runs on diversions. If your dates are flexible, choose the shoulder days (the day after the main event) for far saner darshan.
